Common mistakes I still see (and try not to make)
I'm a systems integrator who's been handling LED display orders for 8 years. I've personally made—and documented—9 significant screen buying mistakes, totaling roughly $24,000 in wasted budget. That number doesn't include the embarrassment of explaining to a client why their new lobby screen showed scanlines in every event photo.
This checklist is for anyone about to buy a video wall: LED panels for lobbies, a COB LED screen for a control room, a transparent LED display for retail glass, a DCI-certified cinema screen like the Unilumin UC-A40, or rental LED screens for events. If you're the person signing the PO, this one's kinda mandatory reading. There are 6 steps, and each one is a mistake I'd rather you not repeat.
Step 1: Write down your actual use case before you look at quotes
Where the screen lives changes every specification downstream. Indoor vs outdoor. Fixed vs rental. Cinema color vs digital signage. One sentence forces you to make the call early instead of letting a sales rep make it for you.
In my first year (2017), I bought an outdoor-rated screen for an indoor lobby because the price per square meter looked amazing. The brightness was overwhelming—it was the lighthouse-in-a-reading-room problem. We had to install a dimming film (super expensive), and the image still looked harsh. The screen wasn't wrong. My use case was. I just hadn't written it down.
Checkpoint: Before you email anyone, write one sentence: "This screen is for [location], used [how often], viewed from [distance], showing [content]." Show that sentence when you request quotes. The recommendations you get back will look completely different.
Step 2: Compare real price per square meter, not the module price
Every LED manufacturer quotes a "price per square meter" that only includes the LED panels. The number you'll actually pay includes controllers, sending cards, power distribution, structural steel, cabling, spares, freight, and installation. If you compare quotes on panel price alone, you're not comparing quotes—you're comparing appetizers.
In the quotes I've reviewed over the past 18 months, the gap between panel price and installed cost has ranged from roughly 25% to 60% depending on site conditions. In 2018 I got two quotes for a 20m² display that looked $300/m² apart. I was about to sign the cheaper one when I asked both vendors to itemize the full system. The "cheap" quote didn't include controllers ($4,800 extra) or structural engineering ($1,950). Suddenly it was 34% more expensive than the "expensive" quote. The surprise wasn't the hidden fees. It was that I'd almost signed a PO based on an incomplete number.

Step 3: Verify DCI certification yourself
"DCI certified" is not a marketing sticker. It's a formal compliance program run by Digital Cinema Initiatives (dcimovies.com). The specification covers things like the DCI-P3 color gamut, a 48 cd/m² (nits) cinema white point, 12-bit color processing at 4:4:4, and 2K/4K support. Products that meet it go through formal testing, and DCI maintains a list of compliant products.
Here's the mistake I made: I trusted "DCI compliant" printed in a brochure and ordered a 1.5mm pitch screen for a small cinema screening room. When the colorist measured the actual color gamut, it didn't cover DCI-P3. The whole display had to be swapped. $6,200 wasted, plus a 3-week delay and a client who stopped taking my calls. I don't blame them.
When you look at the Unilumin UC-A40 DCI certified price, you're paying for the certification process and the components required to hold that performance in a dark theater. That's legitimate. But make the vendor prove it for the exact SKU you're buying, not for the product family. And if a "DCI-certified" price feels too low to be real, treat that as a red flag, not a deal.
Checkpoint: Before you sign anything, request the DCI compliance documentation for the specific model number. A brochure PDF with the word "certified" on it doesn't count.
Step 4: For fixed installs, give a COB LED screen a serious look
If the screen will live somewhere hard to reach—a high lobby wall, a control room, a retail front—chip-on-board (COB) technology deserves more consideration than most buyers give it. Instead of individual SMD lamps soldered onto the board, COB mounts the LED chips directly on the PCB and covers them with a protective layer. The practical result: better impact resistance, better protection from dust and moisture, and fewer individual points of failure. The tradeoff: it usually costs more per square meter upfront.
In September 2022, I specced an SMD screen for a control room because the quote was $3,000 cheaper than the COB LED screen alternative. Over the next 18 months, we replaced 14 individual lamps—four separate service callouts with a scaffold in a room that was never designed for a scaffold. The technician started recognizing the client's receptionist. The $3,000 difference disappeared into labor and ladder time.
Never expected the SMD screen's picture quality to be the thing I had to defend. Turns out the picture was fine. It was the recurring dead lamps and the maintenance hassle that hurt—which is exactly what the COB LED screen would have minimized.
Checkpoint: Ask yourself: if this screen fails in year two, how hard is it to access? If you can't touch a module without a lift or scaffold, spec COB and budget for it. SMD still makes sense when service access is easy—just make that a conscious decision, not a default.
Step 5: Transparent LED displays—don't chase the highest transparency ratio
Transparent LED displays are a great fit for storefront glass. But if you're shopping for an LED display transparent enough to let passersby see the products behind it, the spec you'll notice first—the transparency ratio—is the one that's most likely to disappoint you in daylight.
Typical transparent LED displays range from roughly 50% to 85% light transmission. The higher the ratio, the sparser the LED placement, which means lower brightness and weaker color saturation. A sun-facing storefront at 85% transparency can look washed out from the sidewalk. A 70-75% panel, paradoxically, is often the one that makes people stop and look. (That was a genuine surprise when I saw them side by side.)
Also check viewing distance before you pick pixel pitch. An industry rule that's held up in every project I've done: minimum comfortable viewing distance in meters ≈ pixel pitch in millimeters. A 10mm pitch transparent screen asks for roughly 10m of viewing distance. If the audience is only 6m away, it's going to look like moving confetti.
And one thing nobody warns you about: transparent LED isn't a standalone product. It's mounted on glass, which means power and data have to reach the middle of a glass pane, the glass structure has to take wind load, and the glazier and the AV installer have to talk to each other. I got a panicked call from a retail project in 2021: "How is power getting to the middle of the glass?" (ugh—my fault, not theirs.)
Checkpoint: Before you spec, write down the glazing details, the actual viewing distance from the footpath, and the light conditions at the times of day when content needs to be visible. Then ask the vendor for a side-by-side demo under daylight, not in a darkened showroom.
Step 6: For events, buy local support—especially in a market like San Diego
If you're searching for LED screen rentals San Diego, the cheapest option will often be a screen shipped in from another state. I did that once for a conference in San Diego. The daily rate was lower, the freight was higher, but the total still looked competitive. Then a module failed at load-in. The vendor's nearest tech was 300 miles away, and the replacement tile didn't arrive until day two of the event. The client paid the invoice, but they never forgot the shaky morning.
Had 48 hours to make the call before the event deadline. Normally I'd do a full site visit and compare three local vendors, but there was no time. I went with a San Diego AV rental company based on a prior relationship and location alone. Two days before show time, one of their LED tiles developed a row of dead pixels. Their warehouse had a spare on hand, and a technician delivered it 20 minutes after I called. Plus, the local crew knew the venue's power and rigging rules, so load-in didn't start with a guessing game. In hindsight, I should have made that call earlier. The local presence did what the cheaper quote couldn't: it showed up.
Checkpoint: Before booking any rental, ask three questions: What spares are in the local warehouse? Who's the on-call technician, and how far are they from the venue? What happens if a tile dies at 7am on show day? The answers will tell you more than the daily rate ever will.
Common mistakes I still see (and try not to make)
- Comparing different pixel pitches. A 1.9mm and a 2.6mm screen are not the same product. If you're comparing them on price alone, stop.
- Skipping spares. Order 5% spare modules for installs, 10% for rentals. It's the cheapest insurance you'll buy all year.
- Judging dead pixels in a bright room. Put the screen to full white, red, green, and blue before you sign the acceptance form. Always.
- Forgetting the controller does half the work. A strong controller can save a mediocre panel. A weak controller will ruin a great one.
- Ignoring scanlines in photos. If the client's marketing team will film this screen, refresh rate matters. A screen that looks fine to the eye can flicker horribly on camera.
Bottom line: a client's first impression of your work is often this screen. When it has scanlines or dead pixels, they don't think "that was a budget decision." They think the person who recommended it dropped the ball. The few hundred dollars you save per square meter comes right out of your credibility. I know because I've paid for that lesson in invoices I still remember.
That's my checklist. Six steps, and every one of them has already cost me something. Since we started using it in late 2023, our team has caught at least 11 potential ordering errors before they became problems. I'd rather you get the checklist without the $24,000 tuition.
